The TDI will be arriiving in the Q7 at the end of this year. It will be a 2009 model year and the famous 3.0L TDI. We dont know the prices yet or how long it will be until you will see it in the A4 or A5's. It is huge in Europe becuase every driver knows about them and how clean they have become. The majority of us who live in North America still think of the old VW's pumping out black smoke. Getting the Americans behind the idea will take some time hense the slow market release over here. I will post any news that I get along the way.

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum looking to aquire my first Audi.
I am from canada and am looking to import or hopefully find on this continent a 2006 or 2007 A4 3.0 TDI quattro, s line, 6 speed and black. Seems to be a very tall order to poeple i have talked to.
Would anyone here know where could start? I don't really want a right hand drive either, so it would have to come from germany, and some prices that i have seen there are reallllly high. It would be cheaper to buy a new 08 here!
Thanks in advance for any help

Hey Stef, welcome to AudiNow .
We're from Canada aswell, Toronto Ontario, where abouts are you?
Inside Guy should be able to give you a better answer then I can. However, I do know that terriffs and taxes ontop of the purchase price will be crippling. The 3.0 TDI would be an incredible car to have in this part of the world. Good luck with your adventure!

Stef,
It can be VERY expensive to do that. If fact you cant do it. That engine doesn't pass our regulations yet. The 3.0L TDi will be here in the Q7 at the end of the year if that would work for you. It would be TONS cheaper than bringing over even the most affordable TDI from Europe.

According to transport Canada, it is impossible to import a vehicle if it is less than 15 years old. If it is not, in addition to the duties you would also have to:
- pay shipping costs (which can easily escalate into the thousands)
- arrange for a thorough cleaning of the vehicle (this is due to Canada's regulations on foreign organic substances being present on/in the vehicle)
- arrange for a Transport Canada vehicle inspection (at your expense of course)
- pay for a vehicle safety standards certificate
- pay taxes on the sale price of the vehicle
- pay for an emissions test in the jurisdiction of registration
in addition to any other fees the government likes to charge. Bad news for us, but if you're thinking about importing a rare older model (ur-quattro or s2 anyone??) it is definitely possible and it might be worth it after all.

im pretty sure you can import any year car as long its from the US. I know that i have seen people drive brand new cars over the border striaght from the dealer and sold them here in canada. Also bringing a TDI Audi from europe would be pretty useless beucase dont they use and diffrent much cleaner disel then what we currently have here in canada? anyone correct me if im rong.

It's definitely easier to import cars from the US than from Europe, but for new cars it can still be a real pain. Transport Canada has lists of new and used vehicles that can and cannot be imported to Canada. I believe the B5 A4 avant and the VW R32 are just two examples of cars that CANNOT be imported (although I have seen both here so I don't know how they legally did it). They don't need as many inspections, in fact I think it only needs one other inspection from Canadian Tire (The Canadian government has contracted them to perform all US vehicle inspections for registration in Canada) in addition to the other standard documents required. However, I don't think he's going to find a 3.0 TDI A4 in the states just yet....if so I want one NOW!!!!!! As for the diesel fuel, you'd really be taking your chances with any engine not designed for North America. Although the design of the fuel system is probably very similar, you'd be hard pressed to find replacement parts at North American dealerships. but man a 3.0 TDI A4 would be perfect!!!!

You are correct about the use of much cleaner fuel overseas. Buying a car in the states and driving it here isn't that easy though. You cant licence a new car bouhgt in the states to a Canadian residence. You can hire a broker to get you a lightly used demo. Some cars however are black listed. The S6 in the states is never allowed to be licenced in Canada for example. Most cars can be done though, but its far from a weekend thing...it takes time and often gets held at the boarder. Its one of the measures that the US goverment uses simply to stop corss boarder theft. The other issue is that if it becomes the norm, Audi will discontinue the warrenties on those such cars. They had a quote saying that Audi lawyers are on salary and wouldnt hesitate to do it should it all become a problem. Personally, i dont think they would ever do that.
